Man Fights and Defeats Anaconda

Two Fergus freshmen wrestlers competing in their first high school state tournament placed second. Wrestling at 103 pounds, Bridger Grover won his first three matches at the state meet held in Billings. In the championship match, Grover fought valiantly before dropping a 3-8 decision to Glendive’s Ben Stortz. Fellow freshman Caleb Birdwell, wrestling at 113 pounds
, also won his first three matches at state, before going up against Belgrade’s Sawyer Degan in the

championship match.Degan pinned Birdwell at the 5:44 mark of the match. Alex Wickens and Ethan Blythe also placed at state, earning fifth-place finishes. Wickens, wrestling at 145 pounds as a freshman, defeated Hamilton’s Robert Few by a 6-4 decision to place fifth. After losing his quarterfinal match, Blythe came back to win two matches and lost one before defeating Hamilton’s Philip Whitney Birdwell, Wickens and Grover all look to improve on their state finishes from last year. Unfortunately, Blythe suffered a knee injury during football and is not able to wrestle this year. Assistant Coach Brendon DeCock has taken over the reins as head coach for the Golden Eagles this year. The Fergus wrestlers have competed well in their first three matches of the season in 2015 and look forward to continuing to improve during 2016. Throughout the summer, the Lewistown Sea Lion swim team set numerous personal best records, pool records, and divisional and state records. At the State Swim Meet, which was held in Roundup on Aug. 1 and 2, the Sea Lions continued their assault on the records. Three of the Sea Lions - Maida Walters, Alex Wickens and Noah Majerus – finished first in all three of their individual events to win high-point trophies at state. Walters, a recent graduate of Fergus High School, won the 200 individual medley, the 100 freestyle and the 400 freestyle. Walters set a state record in the 400-meter freestyle. Majerus, competing in the 13-14 year old boys division, won the 200 individual medley, the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Wickens, competing in the 15-19 year old men’s division, took firsts in 200 individual medley, the 100 backstroke and the 400 freestyle. With Majerus moving up to the older age division next year, Wickens and Majerus will have the opportunity to compete against each other for several years.
